What The Cloud Can Do For You
Cloud computing is one of those woolly terms that has several different meaning depending on who you ask and how much techno babble you can take at any one time. This isn’t a bad thing though, cloud computing as a concept has been around for a while but as a common application it’s still pretty new. Well OK, cloud computing has really been around for year but it’s only after we’ve started to get over the recession that businesses have really started to take an interest and it’s just now that it’s starting to become common place in the business world.
Cloud computing and cloud hosting should ultimately reduce your IT costs and make it more efficient. One way this is done is through server virtualization. Server virtualization talks about taking all the data and all the information like documents and applications that you normally keep on your office based server and moving it all to a server at a virtual location. These remote severs are housed in huge data centers which means you no longer have to worry about yours. You no longer have to spend your time and energy powering and cooling your data centers. This saving alone can sometimes be enough for some businesses to want to migrate to the cloud.
There’s also a lot more savings you’re going to see. Now you no longer have to worry about your own servers you’re not having to pay for space you’re not actually using. With physical servers you have to pay for the whole thing including any empty space you’re not using at the moment. With cloud computing you’re only actually paying for the server space you actually need and if you do suddenly need that extra room it’s there waiting for you at the click of a button. It’s only when you actually start using that extra space that you start paying for it and the second you’re done with it you’re no longer having to pay for it.
