A free registry cleaner program can be tempting for the apparent reasons. But the old saying that you get what you pay for is just as true with these programs as with anything else. While it can be convenient and a money saver to download a free program, you have to weigh the difference between a free program and a program you buy from a software company.

The biggest risk that free programs come with is the chance that they may contain viruses or malware. Depending upon where you get the program from, it may have been passed across many different computers. If you download directly from the maker’s site, you might be able to avoid these potential problems, but there are still other things to consider. Free registry cleaner programs might not set off any problems, but they could lack the support you get from a software company’s program.

The better option is purchasing a registry cleaning program. They are low in cost, and manufacturers provide technical and customer services if something goes wrong. They also generally support different operating systems which may not be the case with free software. This is beneficial if you have more than one computer that run on different operating systems.  You can also reap the rewards of upgrades and a free trial period.

Regardless of whether you choose to go with a free program or not, you must completely ensure that it comes with backup capabilities. If the cleaner cannot backup your registry before it cleans the registry, you should avoid it altogether. A damaged registry is a big problem and only a program with a backup utility can restore a previous version of the registry if you run into a problem.

If something were to happen to your registry, and it wasn’t backed up, not only will you experience frustration, but you may run up unwanted expenditures.  So really if you have a little extra cash, it is smart to avoid a free registry cleaner program, and invest in software that you can truly rely on to speed up your computer and keep it running efficiently.
